Move Makers is a new school travel challenge from Living Streets that encourages pupils to travel to school in more active and sustainable ways.
Pupils log their journeys each day, earn points, and take part in a monthly class challenge with fun, inclusive rewards.
It is essential to add your school’s holiday and Inset dates to Move Makers so that any days when pupils are not in school are ignored when calculating points and rewards.
Default holidays have been added based on information from your Local Authority, but you will need to check these and add any school specific holidays such as Inset days. You can do this in the Champion account, in the ‘Manage School’ view. Scroll to the bottom of the page to find the ‘Edit school holidays’ button. Click this and then add or check the dates on the next screen.
The top half of the screen shows Local Authority holidays; you can add additional school closures in the second half of the screen and even apply these to individual classes.
When you begin using Move Makers, it is important to add a pre-launch holiday covering the period between the start of term and your start date to avoid these non-recording dates impacting your engagement points.
Holiday dates are inclusive. When adding new holidays please ensure the start and end dates are part of the holiday, not the first or final day of term.
Remember to click ‘Save’ when you’ve finished.
When you're logged into the Champion account select ‘Create a new class’ from either the ‘Dashboard’ or ‘Manage Classes’ view.
Enter the class name, and select which year group it is in. You can select more than one year group if needed. Select ‘Next’ to create the class.
You have the option here to include pupils’ first names, or to use icon names.
Select ‘Next’.
Check and edit the class details on the next screen. If you wish, you can change the icons allocated to each child. Once you’re happy, you can create your class.
The maximum class size is 99 pupils.
All school and pupil details and travel data saved on the website is securely stored on web servers and all data security processes meet the requirements of the ISO27001 standard.
Access to your school and pupil details is restricted by secure login. Please ensure your login details are kept secure and are known only to people in your school who need to use the application. Ensure you log off when you are not using it. If your web browser offers to remember your password for you, please decline. If you have reason to believe an unauthorised person has access to your login details, please report this to Living Streets at: movemakers@livingstreets.org.uk.
The collective progress of your school will be searchable by public sector bodies within your local authority area (such as PCTs or local authorities), and by our evaluation partners, subject to Living Streets giving authorisation for access. However no staff or pupil names or other personal details will be visible to these parties.
Unless required to do so by law, we will not otherwise share, sell or distribute any of the information you provide to us without your consent. Living Streets will have access rights to your data, but will not have access to individual children's information that can be linked back to that child. Individual children will not be able to be identified externally from the information entered.

Baseline (or ‘Practice mode’) is where each class records how pupils usually travel to school each day. It’s important to complete the baseline in all classes before launching or talking about Move Makers, to ensure you set an accurate baseline for the challenge.
Class teachers should select the ‘Classroom login’ tab and enter the three-word classroom access code. This can be found in the ‘Manage School’ view in the Champion account.
Each pupil can tap their name/icon, followed by how they usually travel to school. Once every class has completed their baseline, you can join a launch assembly or self-launch using the presentation on our website in school to encourage pupils to travel actively to school.
Your school has its own unique parent/carer portal which allows parents and carers to keep up with the Move Makers challenge. You can find a link to this in the ‘Dashboard’ area of the Champion account. From the ‘Dashboard’, click on the green ‘View & print parent letter’ button in the bottom right hand corner.
A new browser will open with template letter for parents. You can print from here, or copy the text, link and QR code and paste it into your newsletter or email to parents.
The parent/carer portal includes class rankings and scores for each month of the challenge. Parents/carers can also view the Impact Reports for the most recent complete month.
It’s up to you to find a time that works best for you. However, we recommend you use it first thing in the morning, for example as pupils arrive or when you take your class register. This way the journey is still fresh in pupils’ minds.
Yes, multiple classes can use your school’s classroom login simultaneously so they can be using Move Makers at the same time.
There is an option to mark pupils as absent instead of recording a trip. Move Makers awards one point for recording an absence, so make sure class teachers log on their behalf to keep up class engagement.
An active journey is anything that includes physical activity - walking, cycling, scooting etc.
Travelling by public transport or using Park & Stride is classed as partially active.
Park & Stride is when a child is driven part way to school, then walks the rest. We recommend the walking portion is at least 5-10 minutes but this will depend on how far away the child lives and the location of any promoted drop-off sites, so use your discretion.
Every journey earns points. Move Makers will award:
Each month, classes can earn special streak points for recording journeys on consecutive school days. Weekends and school holidays won’t break a streak. These are awarded once per month, so only the longest streak counts. Move Makers will calculate these automatically.
Each month, pupils earn bonus points for making active journeys. The more active journeys they record, the more bonus points they earn. These are added to class totals.
For the purposes of bonus points, Park & Stride and public transport journeys count as active journeys.
The crown symbol is awarded to the pupil with the highest current score in each class. This is updated as pupils record their journeys, so it may move around each day. If several pupils have equal scores, they will each have a crown icon.
The gold, silver and bronze dots on pupils’ icons show which pupils have been awarded the gold, silver and bronze awards each month. These awards are for the top three highest scoring positions in each class. If several pupils have equal scores at the end of the month, they will each have the relevant icon. The calculation will automatically take place once the previous month is no longer available for logging (i.e. two logging days in).
To encourage regular and accurate journey logging, you can record one day in the past. To enter journeys for a date in the past, simply click on ‘Today’ in the top left of the Classroom view and select the previous day’s date.
The class with the highest total points per pupil at the end of the month are the Move Makers winners! The calculation will automatically take place once the previous month is no longer available for logging (i.e. two logging days in).
When you’re logged into the Champion account, select ‘Celebrations’ from the left hand menu, followed by the ‘Class Leaderboard’ tab. Select the month you’re awarding for from the dropdown menu at the top of the page to see that month’s top scoring class.
The calculation will automatically take place once the previous month is no longer available for logging (i.e. two logging days in). When you're logged into the Champion account, select ‘Celebrations’ from the left hand menu, followed by the ‘Change Makers’ tab. Select the month you’re awarding for from the dropdown menu at the top of the page to see that month’s Change Makers in each class.
In the Champion account, select ‘Reports’ from the left hand menu. Click on the calendar icon in the ‘From’ and ‘To’ sections, select a class from the dropdown menu (optional) and click ‘Show report’ to see your results.
Any report screen can be downloaded into an Excel-friendly file by clicking on the ‘Download report’ button. There is also the option to toggle between showing numbers or percentages on the report.
In the Champion account, select ‘Impact Reports’ from the left hand menu. Click on the calendar icon in the ‘From’ and ‘To’ sections, select a class from the dropdown menu (optional) and click ‘Generate report’ to see your results.
Impact estimates are calculated using UK Department for Transport National Travel Survey data on school travel patterns. We estimate the distance travelled by pupils who walk, cycle or scoot to school and the associated reduction in car journeys and carbon emissions. Calculations use nationally recognised travel and emissions data, together with conservative assumptions to ensure reported impacts are robust and credible.
On the Champion login screen, click on the link for people who have forgotten their password. You will be asked to enter your email address so we can email you instructions for resetting your password. If you are still having problems resetting your password, please contact us.
You can do this from the ‘Manage classes’ view in the left hand menu of the Champion account.
Click the three dots in the top right corner of the class you want to edit. In the next screen you can bulk change the class’s year group, click on the pencil icon next to a pupil’s name to move them to another class or year group.
We recommend moving pupils between classes each year, rather than deleting and creating them from scratch.
Deleting existing pupil details will not delete any journeys logged on the system, and you will still be able to see historical data on the reports.
Remember to click ‘Save changes’ when you’ve finished.
You can add or delete pupils from a class from the ‘Manage classes’ or ‘Dashboard’ views on the Champion account. Click on the three dots in the top right of the relevant class and ‘Edit class’. In the next screen you can edit or delete pupils. Deleting existing pupil details will not delete any journeys logged on the system, and you will still be able to see historical data on the reports.
Remember to click ‘Save changes’ when you’ve finished.
